Tobacco funding ban fails

Faculty Senate votes 21 to 10 against restrictions on research

NEWS| A divided Faculty Senate voted 21-10 yesterday against a controversial resolution that would have banned tobacco companies from funding University-sponsored research projects. The measure — which proposed that “Stanford University will not enter into sponsored research agreements with companies that make or market tobacco products” — pitted faculty and administrators against one another at yesterday’s meeting.

Thefts plague natl. science buildings

NEWS| Early Sunday morning, an improvised security camera set up by graduate students working in the Hansen Experimental Physics Lab (HEPL) captured the image of a thief who may be connected to the string of burglaries that have taken place in a cluster of natural sciences buildings nearby. The video prompted Francisco LePort, a fourth-year graduate student in physics, to distribute an open letter calling for President Hennessy to tighten security at HEPL.

Burbank preps for frosh crop

NEWS| Come September, Burbank will join Larkin and Donner as the newest all-freshman residence in Stern Hall. As a result of a record-high matriculation rate for incoming freshman — 70.8 percent of admitted students chose to enroll for next year — the University has had to make some last-minute housing rearrangements before the upperclassmen housing draw comes to a close.
