The 2024-2025 housing process is set to open next month with a new set of restrictions and procedures, according to an email to students from Stanford’s Residential and Dining Enterprises (R&DE) earlier this week. The announced changes follow four years of frequent and recursive shifts in the Stanford undergraduate housing process.

Sophomores will choose their housing first from the sophomore-priority spaces, followed by seniors and juniors. Housing groups will be limited to four students, a change from last year’s cap of eight students. 

The University will also begin providing help to students looking for roommates, allowing students to describe themselves on their applications and find similar students on the housing portal, which will now include a messaging system. 

In accordance with last year’s housing process, individuals and housing groups will still receive “gate times,” or randomly assigned times for students to log on to the portal and choose from available housing. Students will receive these times on May 23, and room selection will begin on May 24 and continue throughout the week, ending May 31. 

The largest shift from last year’s housing process to this year’s is the removal of neighborhood system restrictions. Beginning this year, rising sophomores, juniors and seniors will be able to choose residences in any neighborhood. 

Additionally, following recommendations from the Neighborhoods Task force, sophomores will be restricted to sophomore-priority spaces: one-room doubles, triples and quads in non-theme RF residence halls, such as Sally Ride or Toyon. 

Recently, Stanford Report announced that Sequoia and Hyperion, the neighborhoods that comprise Wilbur, will merge into one neighborhood: Sequoia. Additionally, the Row will become its own neighborhood named Rowan – with the exception of Muwekma-Tah-Ruk and the Well House, which will be in Olive. Finally, Wisteria will now house Mirrelees. 

Frosh will still be assigned to a neighborhood as they enter Stanford, and neighborhoods will continue to exist as funding sources and event organizers. However, after their frosh year, students will no longer be restricted to housing options within their neighborhood.

Additionally, EVGR-A will begin transitioning back into a graduate-only student resident next year. In the 2024-25 school year, R&DE estimates that only floors one through six will host undergraduate students, according to the email.

The housing application form, in which students indicate their draw group, is due April 22 in Axess by 5 pm.
