Both Stanford basketball teams were well-represented in the All-Pac-10 teams, which were chosen by the conference’s coaches.
On the women’s side, sophomore forward Nnemkadi Ogwumike received the biggest honor, being named Pac-10 Player of the Year by both the coaches and the media. Ogwumike led the conference in scoring at 18.2 points per game and field goal percentage at 63.8 percent from the field, while also ranking third in rebounding with 9.4 per game. The award was the third consecutive honor for a Cardinal player, as teammate Jayne Appel won last year and Candice Wiggins won the year before. Stanford has captured six of the last seven Player of the Year honors.
Redshirt senior guard Rosalyn Gold-Onwude was named the Co-Defensive Player of the Year in the Pac-10, sharing the honor with Briana Gilbreath from USC. Gold-Onwude was the Cardinal’s best on-ball defender this year, and she helped Stanford lead the conference in scoring defense and field goal percentage defense at 54.3 points per game and 33.9 percent. She was also an All-Pac-10 honorable mention in addition to being on the All-Defensive Team.
Stanford also had a large presence on the All-Pac-10 Team, which consists of the 15 best players in the conference. Four Cardinal women made the list — Ogwumike, Appel, junior forward Kayla Pedersen and junior guard Jeanette Pohlen. Freshman forward Joslyn Tinkle was named an honorable mention All-Freshman performer, and Pedersen was also an honorable mention All-Defensive player.
On the men’s side, Stanford was yet again led by senior forward Landry Fields. Fields was named the Pac-10’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year for men’s basketball. He led the Pac-10 in scoring at 22.2 points per game and was second in rebounds at 8.7 per game. Fields also excelled with a 3.03 GPA and will graduate this spring with a degree in communications.
Fields was edged out by Cal’s Jerome Randle for Pac-10 Player of the Year honors, but he still made the 10-person All-Pac-10 First Team. Sophomore guard Jeremy Green was named to the Second Team, as he averaged 16.9 points per game and leads the conference in three-pointers with 92.
Both Cardinal basketball teams are currently competing in the Pac-1o Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif.
