Bomb forces PAPD evacuation

Feb. 26, 2010, 1:00 a.m.

A live pipe bomb caused the Palo Alto Police Department to become the scene of an evacuation on Thursday evening, according to the San Jose Mercury News.

A man brought what officials believed to be a plastic pipe bomb inside a shopping bag to the PAPD office on Forest Avenue for disposal at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday. After telling the man to leave the bomb just outside the lobby door, police evacuated employees from both the department and the downtown library. Pedestrian and vehicle traffic were also stopped on neighboring streets.

The Santa Clara Bomb Squad detonated the bomb at 6:30 p.m., and traffic resumed normal flow.

It is unknown where the man found the bomb. He is currently being questioned and is not considered a suspect.
