Men’s tennis

Against rival UCLA on Friday, the Stanford men’s tennis team fell 4-2 to end its hopes for an NCAA title. The team lost the doubles point for only the fourth time this year, as freshmen Matt Kandath and Denis Lin lost a tiebreaker to give the point to the Bruins. In the singles matches, sophomores Bradley Klahn and Ryan Thacher won at first and second singles, respectively, but the remainder of the lineup failed to perform at the same level. Junior Alex Clayton, Lin and senior Richard Wire, the next three players in the order, all lost their matches, with Clayton’s loss to Matt Brooklyn sealing the win for UCLA.

Women’s tennis

In a momentous upset, the Stanford women’s tennis team upset top-seeded Baylor for a berth in the NCAA semifinals in Athens, Ga. The team took home a 4-2 win, winning the doubles point and taking three of five singles matches. Junior Hilary Barte headlined the victory, taking a 7-5, 7-5 win over No. 5 Lenka Broosova. Freshman Mallory Burdette continued her stellar season as well, earning her 35th win 6-4, 6-0 over Baylor’s Taylor Ormond. The women will take on No. 6 Notre Dame on Monday.

Softball

In an unexpected turn of events, two consecutive losses saw Stanford’s softball team eliminated from the NCAA Tournament on Saturday. Though it was playing at home and held the No. 15 national rankings, the Card found itself unable to stave off elimination. After falling to Hawaii, 6-3, in the first game of the afternoon, Stanford was unable to secure a must-win game against Texas Tech. The Cardinal beat the Red Raiders on Friday, but found itself out of the tournament after a stunning 6-3 loss.
