Senior small forward Landry Fields, the captain and offensive leader of Stanford’s men’s basketball team last season, was taken in the second round in last night’s NBA Draft in New York City. Fields was drafted in the second round with the 39th overall pick by the New York Knicks.
Last season, Fields led the Pac-10 in scoring with 22 points per game, and was second in the conference with 8.8 rebounds per game. He was named the conference’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year, and was named First Team All-Pac-10.
The choice of Fields was seen by some as a surprise pick, as some higher-rated players at his position, including West Virginia senior Da’Sean Butler, were still on the board when the selection came. Nevertheless, he will probably be able to contribute right away, as the Knicks are currently in a rebuilding phase and have no clear-cut starter at small forward.
Fields was New York’s second choice in the draft, after the Knicks took senior shooting guard Andy Rautins from Syracuse with the 38th overall pick.
