Lasers | The Linac Coherent Light Source at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory has yielded the first published scientific findings to use the ultra-intense X-ray. “An era of exploring the interactions of high-intensity, hard X-rays with matter has begun,” said researchers in a study published Thursday in Nature. The LCLS opened last May.

Spies? | Anna Chapman, one of 10 alleged Russian spies arrested in the United States this week, appeared in a photo at Stanford’s Global Technology Symposium in March, the AP reported. The symposium was held at Arrillaga Alumni Center and in Sunnyvale; tickets cost upward of $1,000.

Condi | Condoleezza Rice, political science professor, former U.S. Secretary of State and classical pianist, is set to perform in a benefit concert with Aretha Franklin on July 27 in Philadelphia.

Hoops | Jayne Appel ’10, former Stanford women’s basketball center, was named to the WNBA All-Star Team, set to play July 10.
