Grad student killed in Yosemite | Christina “Chris” Chan, a doctoral student in political science, died on Friday in Yosemite National Park after a 400-ft. fall while climbing. Chan was the former co-president of the Stanford Alpine Club, and a memorial service has been scheduled for Sunday, July 18 at 1 p.m. in Memorial Church.

Arsenic, Old Lace, and a Cancer Treatment? | A form of arsenic has been used to treat leukemia for more than 10 years, and now Stanford researchers are finding that it can be useful for other types of cancer as well. Pick your poison.

Lucky Strike … or Four | Joan Ginther Ph.D. ’76 won the lottery for a fourth time today for $10 million, bringing her total winnings from the Texas lottery to over $20 million. A math professor, Ginter now lives in Texas.

Stadium Conundrum | The A’s move to San Jose’s time is running out, the Mercury News reports, and as usual, sports stadium economist and oft-cited expert Roger Noll gives his two cents.

Overheard | “Unless you have been in exile, you never know what a burden it is, what a sacrifice it is,” Hoover fellow and professor Abbas Milani told Stanford magazine in an in-depth feature, discussing his life, studies, and hopes for the future of Iran.
