BRIEF: Facebook announces new features

Oct. 6, 2010, 4:01 p.m.

The attentions of tech bloggers Silicon Valley-over have been hijacked by Facebook after the company’s press conference today. Three important new features were announced by the social media giant. Two of them – the ability to download personal data for backup (or if you want to leave the site altogether), and a centralized dashboard for apps – are clear positive steps towards transparency and control of information. The third feature is a new Groups implementation from the ground up. Gizmodo has a pretty nice recap of all the announcements that were made.

The new Groups are being presented by Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg as the future of social interaction online. Mashable’s Brenna Ehrlich seems to agree. And if you thought these are some cool announcements, TechCrunch thinks that there’s more to come.
