Letter: Beutelsbach, not Florence, was first BOSP outpost

Oct. 12, 2010, 12:15 a.m.

Dear Editor,

In “Framing Florence” (Oct. 6), there is a small factual mistake. The author says that “Stanford has had an abroad program in Florence for 50 years — it was the University’s first foreign outpost.” It is true that Stanford in Florence was opened in 1960 and has been going strong for 50 fabulous and successful years. But the first foreign outpost of the Bing Overseas Studies Program was in Beutelsbach, Germany, a program that opened in 1958.
