BRIEF: Men’s swimming takes another conference championship

March 9, 2011, 1:39 a.m.

Another year, another championship.

After a stellar season that had it ranked at No. 1 for much of the year, the Stanford men’s swimming team took first in last week’s conference championships in Long Beach, Calif. The victory gave the Cardinal its 30th straight Pac-10 championship.

Junior Chad La Tourette led the charge for Stanford, defending his title in the 1650 free with a time of 14:38.13. Sophomores Matthew Swanson and Matt Thompson, along with junior Curtis Lovelace and senior Austin Staab, made top-three finishes in various events.

Stanford’s 911-point performance was enough to edge out the 864-point finish of second-place Cal, which lost to the then-No. 1 Cardinal in the final dual meet of the season, back on Feb. 19.

Next up for Stanford is the Zone Diving Championships in Minneapolis, which begin on March 10.
