Bing Overseas Studies Executive Director Irene Kennedy confirmed that the University has canceled the spring Kyoto Program in an e-mail to students enrolled in this program.
“As we’ve all come to understand, there is still a great deal of uncertainty about Japan’s short term recovery,” Kennedy said. “Given the events in Japan, a decision has been reached to cancel the Kyoto program this spring.
“In light of the unknown future impacts on Japan’s infrastructure it’s not likely we could provide the full breadth and depth of programming we are accustomed to offering,” she said.
Students who were set to study in Japan next quarter have been offered a number of alternative overseas studies options, among them a chance to participate in the Spring 2011-12 Kyoto program without reapplying.
Student Housing is currently working to accommodate these students’ on-campus housing. At present, more than half of students will be able to retain their current housing.
