Baseball to host Longhorns for four-game series

March 1, 2017, 11:50 p.m.

No. 16 Stanford baseball (6-2) seeks to extend its six-game win streak with a four-game series against No. 27 Texas (6-3) starting on Thursday at the Sunken Diamond.

The Cardinal are coming off a dominant 8-2 win on Tuesday against UC Davis. Every Stanford starter earned a hit in the game as the team cruised to a season-high eight runs. Junior Quinn Brodey continued his hot streak from the weekend sweep against Kansas, racking up four hits. Sophomore Nico Hoerner also impressed, hitting three doubles with an RBI. The home victory marked 12 straight wins at the Sunken Diamond dating back to last season, a streak Stanford hopes to continue on Thursday.

Stanford pitching has been a highlight this season, and the game against UC Davis showed the consistency and depth of the Cardinal bullpen. Senior Brett Hanewich earned his first win of the young season, allowing just two runs while striking out five. Pitching coach Rusty Filter has had success developing this year’s freshman pitchers — Will Matthiessen showed poise as a reliever, throwing four scoreless innings to earn his second save of the season.

The Longhorns are on a two-game win streak of their own, racking up nine runs against Lamar on Tuesday. Against a ranked Texas team, Stanford must continue to hit consistently throughout the lineup in order to continue its winning ways.

Stanford will play Texas on Thursday and Friday at 6 p.m. Saturday’s game will begin at 2 p.m., and the series will wrap up Sunday at noon. All games will be played at the Sunken Diamond.
