Sailing heads south for Singlehanded National Championships

Nov. 7, 2019, 9:17 p.m.

Stanford sailing will travel to Santa Barbara this weekend for the Singlehanded National Championship. Junior Christina Sakellaris, sophomore John Kirkpatrick and freshman Hallie Schiffman will be representing the Cardinal at the two-day competition.

The regatta, which is co-hosted by the Santa Barbara Yacht Club and UC Santa Barbara, welcomes the top 18 male and 18 female singlehanded sailors in the country.

Sakellaris returns as the defending singlehanded national champion. If she does win the championship this season, she will be awarded the Janet Lutz Trophy for the second straight year. She won the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference (PCCSC) singlehanded championships with only 11 points in 10 races this past year.

Only a freshman, Schiffman, too, shows great promise this season. She placed second behind Sakellaris at the PCCSC championships with just 19 points in 10 races. This weekend will afford her another opportunity to shine alongside Sakellaris.

Kirkpatrick placed second at the PCCSC championships with 44 points. Last year, he won the championship with 14 points in 10 races. He will be competing for the Glen S. Foster Trophy this weekend.

Stanford is coming off an excellent performance at the Match Race National Championship last weekend. They swept Georgetown in a first-to-three wins event final. Cardinal junior skipper Jack Parkin with crew sophomore Wiley Rogers, junior Victoria Thompson and senior Jacob Rosenberg won the Cornelius Shields, Sr. Trophy. The group went 8-1 in a round-robin competition before beating out Jacksonville in a best-of-three semifinal to reach the final.

The Singlehanded National Championship will begin Saturday and continue through Sunday.
