After becoming the winningest college basketball coach prior to her retirement last season, Stanford coaching legend Tara VanDerveer keeps on winning.
Back in May, Stanford Athletics announced that the court at Maples Pavilion, home to Stanford’s women and men basketball teams, would be officially renamed Tara VanDerveer Court, in respect to her legacy. The dedication ceremony and public celebration will take place during the Cardinal’s home game against Gonzaga on Nov. 10, with tipoff set for noon, the organization publicized yesterday.
VanDerveer led Stanford to three national championships (1990, 1992 and 2021) and 14 Final Fours during her 38 seasons at the helm. Her remarkable 46-year coaching career, which included stints at Idaho and Ohio State, concluded with 1,216 victories. However, VanDerveer’s mark on the program has not disappeared, as her protege Kate Paye will enter her first season as head coach of the program.
The November event marks a tribute to a coach who has been a pillar of women’s basketball and a global ambassador for Stanford.
