Stanford women’s basketball lands five-star recruit Lara Somfai

On Wednesday morning, Class of 2025 five-star recruit Lara Somfai announced her commitment to Stanford University on Instagram. The 6-foot-4 forward chose Stanford over the likes of other powerhouse basketball programs like Duke and UConn.

Somfai is Stanford’s first Australian commit since Agnes Emma-Nnopu transferred to Texas Christian University in 2023. Ranked 16th in her class by ESPN, she brings valuable experience to the Farm. Currently attending IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., Somfai has also competed internationally. Last summer, she represented Australia in the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup, where she averaged 14.4 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game. She brings a distinct ability to create shots and draw fouls.

With her height, Somfai will help address Stanford’s lack of size. Last season, Stanford dominated in the post, but with the departures of forward Kiki Iriafen and center Cameron Brink, the team entered the 2024-25 season with only one player—freshman Kennedy Umeh—standing 6-foot-4 or taller. Somfai’s length will help reestablish Stanford’s presence in the paint.

Somfai joins an already stacked recruitment class. Her commitment to Stanford marks the third five-star recruit that Stanford has picked up in the class of 2025. She joins ninth-ranked point guard Hailee Swain and 31st-ranked center Alexandra Eschmeyer. As head coach Kate Paye and her coaching staff continue to build the next class, we may see one or two additional recruits.

This article has been updated to reflect that Agnes Emma-Nnopu was the most recent Australian Stanford women’s basketball commit before Lara Somfai. The Daily regrets this error.
