Stanford beach volleyball secures two ranked wins in season-opening tournament

No. 5 women’s beach volleyball (3-3, 0-0 ACC) finished off their time in sunny Waikiki, Hawaii with two wins against No. 12 Hawaii (0-6, 0-0 Mountain West) and No. 11 Arizona State (1-5, 0-0 Big 12) at the Duke Kahanamoku Beach Classic. They had a rocky start to the tournament with close losses against No. 7 LMU (5-1, 0-0 WCC), No. 2 TCU (3-3, 1-0 Big 12) and No. 3 UCLA (5-1, 0-0 Big 10), in which the final score for all the games being 2-3. They pulled off a narrow win, however, against No. 1 USC (4-1, 0-0 Big 10) 3-2.

The Cardinal kicked off their Saturday matchups with a 5-0 sweep against Hawaii. On court one, sophomores Brooke Rockwell and Ruby Sorra took the first match with two close sets, 21-18 and 21-19.

Court two, with senior Taylor Wilson and freshman Charlotte Bell, and court four, with sophomores Chloe Hoffman and Clara Stowell, were both three-set fights. Court two saw the concession of the first set to the Bows with final score 16-21, but the Cardinal came back strong with 21-15 and 15-11 for the second two sets. Court four had a strong start with the opening set 21-14, and then the second set lost 17-21 to finish with a close tiebreaker of 18-16.

Court three was won by junior Kelly Belardi and freshman Avery Jackson with set scores of 21-12 and 21-18, while court five saw redshirt junior Emma Morris and sophomore Ashley Vincent’s first win as a pair, going 21-19 and 21-10.

The team continued that momentum against Arizona State to also pull out another 5-0 game, this time with all straight sets. On court one, Rockwell and Sorra finished 21-16, 21-14, just like Bell and Wilson on court two. Morris and Vincent continued their winning streak, pulling out a decisive victory against the Sun Devils, 21-10 and 21-1.

The Cardinal are going into their next matchups 3-3, and will take on Sacramento State (1-2, 0-0 Big Sky) and Saint Mary’s (2-2, 0-0 WCC) this Friday, Feb. 28 at home for the Battle of the Bay tournament.
