Women’s lacrosse takes down No. 7 UVA, sets tone for inaugural ACC season

No. 14 Stanford women’s lacrosse (4-0, 1-0 ACC) beat No. 7 University of Virginia (2-1, 0-1 ACC) 13-7 on Saturday afternoon in their first ACC win of the season, marking their highest ranked win since 2016.

While the Cavaliers were first on the scoreboard with three goals, they lost that momentum for much of the match, as they could not compete with the Cardinal’s offensive onslaught. The Cavaliers’ goal in the last minute of the game wasn’t enough to overcome their seven point deficit.

Junior Lucy Pearson made five saves during the game, critical to keeping the Cardinal’s lead. Redshirt junior Jordyn Case, who was recently named the IWLCA DI and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Offensive Player of the Week, and redshirt sophomore Aliya Polisky added a goal each about twenty seconds apart from each other in the first half. In the second half of the game, the Cardinal stepped up their offense to keep the Cavaliers at bay with four shot clock violations and 11 turnovers.

With decisive wins against all their other matchups thus far, the closest victory margin being five points and the greatest one being 17 points, the team is looking strong for the rest of their ACC matchups this season. The Card’s next matchup is against Pitt (2-2, 0-1 ACC) at home on Feb. 27 in their second-ever ACC matchup.

A previous version of this article stated that the game against Pitt was Feb. 28. The Daily regrets this error.
