CBS News misused a photo of a Stanford Daily reporter in a Thursday segment, incorrectly identifying him as Billy Ramirez ’27. Ironically, the segment focused on Stanford’s alteration of Ramirez’s appearance using artificial intelligence (AI), which has sparked national controversy.

News broke earlier this week that Stanford Residential Dining and Enterprises (RD&E) used generative AI to modify the appearance of three Stanford students, changing Ramirez’s race, gender and appearance and altering the appearance of the other two students.

CBS is not the first network to cover the incident. CNN, Fox News and ABC7 have all produced their own reports.

Instead of using a photo of Ramirez, however, CBS used a photo of a Daily staffer from a video posted to the Daily’s social media accounts six months ago.

CBS then posted videos of their segment to Instagram and TikTok. As of Thursday night, the videos have amassed 1.7 million views and 225,000 likes on TikTok, and 109,000 views and 4,000 likes on Instagram.

A chorus of commenters on both videos were quick to point out the error. “THAT’S NOT HIM EITHER,” wrote one user. Another wrote, “If I was Billy I’d sue everyone,” receiving over 30,000 likes.

Ramirez commented on the Instagram post himself, saying, “That photo is not me lol.”

The Stanford Daily has asked CBS News via email to issue an apology and take down both videos.
