Stanford alum Dan Grunfeld ’06 MBA ’17 is set to become the new general manager for the men’s basketball program. A social media post from ESPN’s Pete Thamel broke the news Thursday afternoon, with Thamel also revealing that Grunfeld will work as an assistant coach for head coach Kyle Smith. Grunfeld replaces Eric Reveno, who held the role for a year before leaving Stanford in July to become the head coach at Brown.
Grunfeld returns to the Farm after playing for the Cardinal from 2002-06. The guard emerged as one of Stanford’s top players during his junior season, averaging 17.9 points and 5.5 rebounds per game before a torn ACL ended his season prematurely. Grunfeld earned first-team All-Pac-10 honors that year. He finished his Stanford career with 979 points and 343 rebounds.
Men’s basketball reached the NCAA Tournament three times during Grunfeld’s four seasons, including as a No. 1 seed in 2004. He played under former head coaches Mike Montgomery and Trent Johnson. After going undrafted in the 2006 NBA Draft, Grunfeld played eight professional seasons overseas, including stints in Germany, Spain and Israel. He retired in 2014 and returned to Stanford, earning an MBA from the Graduate School of Business in 2017.
Grunfeld brings a familiarity with basketball operations as his father, former NBA guard Ernie Grunfeld, served as the general manager for the New York Knicks (1993-99), Milwaukee Bucks (1999-03) and most recently the Washington Wizards (2003-19).
Grunfeld enters the fold as head coach Kyle Smith prepares for his third season, looking to continue to lift up a program that is 41–26 under his leadership. The season will tip off Oct. 17 in a road game against Santa Clara.
