Apply yourself | “True to form, jobless are heading back to school” — but not necessarily to the GSB, says an admission official.

Giving pledge | Six Stanford alumni are among the wealthy who joined Warren Buffett’s and Bill and Melinda Gates’ pledge to give away most of their money: Tom Steyer M.B.A. ’83 and Kat Taylor M.B.A./J.D. ’85; Jeff Skoll M.B.A. ’95; Victoria Sant ’61; John Morgridge M.B.A. ’57; and Lorry Lokey ’49. (The Stanford Daily building is named after Lokey, who helped fund its construction.)

Iced | For the first time in years, Coupa Café has not run out of ice during this cooler-than-usual Bay Area summer, says owner Jean Paul Coupal ’07. (Coupal also speaks — in Stanford terms — about an apparent trend of cafés shutting down their WiFi, as his café does on weekends in Palo Alto. Diners “felt the whole place was being taken over by techies,” he said.)

Lesjak | Stanford biology alumna Cathie Lesjak ’81 is the new interim head of Palo Alto-based Hewlett-Packard after its former CEO, Mark Hurd, resigned Friday. On Hurd’s exit, law professor Joseph Grundfest said, “When all this comes out you’ll have directors of other companies saying we would have dealt with it differently.”

‘At grave risk’ | Climate scientist Chris Field is concerned about the infrastructure that helps us observe earth from space.

Sunshine and babies | During his 50-year career, a Stanford doctor has helped save 30,000 sick or premature babies.

Rankings | Huffington Post College has made a whole page for college rankings, if you’re into that sort of thing. In another realm, John Farquhar of the Stanford School of Medicine lays out five cancer-fighting foods.

Swimming | Stanford’s Andie Taylor and Kelsey Ditto reach finals in the national swimming championships in Irvine.

Overheard | “American resolve is, frankly, getting a little tired. And I take some responsibility for that.” — Political science professor Condoleezza Rice speaking on Friday at the Aspen Institute. She appeared with another former secretary of state, Madeleine Albright, for a moderated talk on foreign policy before taking part in a closed-door session with the Aspen Strategy Group.
