Alan Harvey will replace Geoffrey Burn as director of Stanford University Press beginning July 1. Harvey currently serves as the deputy director and editor in chief for the press, which publishes around 165 books per year.

By publishing a broader range of subjects and for a broader range of audiences, Burn and Harvey have worked together over the last decade to implement innovative structural changes for the press, causing its revenue to increase 27 percent over a decade in a generally stagnant market.

“The concept of redefining the press’ subject coverage – really the core of what we do – is entirely Geoffrey’s,” Harvey told the Stanford Report of Burn’s work as director. “He was also able to implement sound business practices that have ensured our growth has been sustainable.”

Harvey speaks frequently on the 21st century publishing landscape due to his knowledge and appreciation for the “digital revolution” in publishing and media delivery. He spent 14 years at Cambridge University Press before coming to Palo Alto in 2002.

To ease the transition, Burn will serve as the press’s deputy editor for the next twelve months.
