More than 50 departments, programs to be represented at Majors Night

More than 50 academic departments and programs will be represented at Majors Night, said Kirsti Copeland, associate dean of residential and pre-major advising.

The event, occurring Wednesday Night from 7-9 p.m. at Paul Brest Hall, is expected to have an attendance of 800 to 1,000 students, including freshmen, sophomores and all undeclared upperclassmen.

Majors Night is intended to give undeclared undergraduates a chance to explore prospective majors as well as learn more about various academic opportunities available.

Copeland explained how the event would serve different but related purposes for freshmen and sophomores. Oftentimes, freshmen and undeclared students are not fully aware of the range of majors and minors available to them.

“For freshmen, the experience is different, we don’t expect freshman to declare a major in their freshman year,” Copeland said. “To them, this is really the first introduction to look across the curriculums available at Stanford and less of a trying to spur them towards a decision or a path.”

However, for the class of 2017, it may be a different story. It is general protocol for sophomore students to declare their major by the end of the spring quarter.

“For sophomores, we see this as an opportunity to really be thinking about that important decision that comes as part of sophomore year,” Copeland said.

Departments at the event will be arranged by general focus area and students are encouraged to explore as many of the departments and booths as they can.
