Chief Operating Officer of the Stanford Daily

The Stanford Daily is looking for its next Chief Operating Officer to start July 1, 2015. This is a full time job for a new grad or co-term.

The COO is responsible for the financial performance of the paper and managing the business staff as well as business/editorial relations. You will gain critical marketing, advertising, publishing, finance, problem solving, long-term strategy and leadership skills managing a professional team. The COO is a member of the Daily’s nine-person Board of Directors.

Responsibilities will include:

Leading the Business Staff
-Set the vision and develop corporate strategy for the business division
-Manage the business staffers – including VP of Sales, Account Manager, Controller, Business Associates and Newspaper Distributors
-Final authority over hiring, firing and compensation of staff

Managing Financials
– Develop and control annual operating budget
– Work with finance staff to prepare corporate financial documents
– Present P&L, Cash Flow and Balance Sheet reports to monthly Board of Directors meetings

Overseeing Operations
– Ensuring that that the day-to-day operations of the Daily are set
– Be point of contact for University administration, corporate partners, alumni
– Perform administrative and human resource tasks

Qualifications:

– Extremely self-directed and does not need a supervisor
– Willing to take initiative to make things happen
– Very organized and be on top of project details
– Able to work well with both students and professionals
– Willingness to learn new things quickly
– Ability to make tough decisions in uncertain environment
– Comfortable working with technology

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience working at the Daily
Interest in journalism and media
