Stanford field hockey continues its four-game homestand this weekend, when the team faces Indiana and Miami University Ohio.
The Hoosiers look to rebound from their last game, a 3-0 loss against No. 12 Louisville, and break the 2-2 record Stanford and Indiana have when facing one another in their favor. The two teams haven’t played each other since 2011, when the Cardinal won in a hotly contested 3-2 victory.
Indiana head coach Amanda Janney, in her first season at the helm for Indiana, seeks to start the team’s West Coast run, which also includes matchups against the University of the Pacific and Cal, in a strong fashion when it plays Stanford.
Leading the Hoosiers in goals and points is senior forward Karen Lorite, with 2 goals and 4 total points.
Next up in a weekend of packed action for the Cardinal will be the University of Miami Ohio. Stanford leads the all-time record against the University of Miami Ohio Redhawks 5-1. Their last meeting was a comfortable 3-0 victory in September 2012.
Currently leading the Cardinal is senior Maddie Secco with 4 points in 2 games. Coming off a strong junior season during which she recorded a career-high 20 points, she was also named to Canada’s Pan American Games women’s field hockey team this past summer.
Senior attacker Lauren Becker, who notched 10 goals last season, is also on the front line to help the Cardinal offensively. In addition, juniors Kristina Bassi and Casey Deeds stepped up against Duke, scoring goals that tied and won the game, respectively.
This past weekend was one of highs and lows for Stanford, with the Cardinal splitting their two games, both of which went into overtime, against top-5 opponents, In what could be considered the toughest inaugural weekend of any team, Stanford competed well against Syracuse but lost a heartbreaker on a short corner in overtime with less than two minutes remaining on the clock.
While eager to rebound from the tough loss, Stanford started slowly against Duke and got down 2-0 before finding a way to fight back and tie the game in regulation with just 30 seconds left. In similar clock-beating fashion, the Cardinal managed to score a late goal in the overtime period with just 14 seconds remaining to propel them ahead of Duke in a thriller of a game.
The team hopes to continue the momentum it gained after beating the Blue Devils last weekend as it faces Indiana on Friday, Sept. 4 at 3 p.m. and University of Miami Ohio on Sunday, Sept. 6 at noon.
