Men’s soccer scores a win against rival California

Oct. 9, 2018, 1:05 a.m.

On Sunday, No. 18 Stanford men’s soccer (6-1-3, Pac-12 3-0-0) traveled north to the University of California (5-4-2, Pac-12 1-2-0) and defeated the Golden Bears 4-2. Junior defender Tanner Beason, the Pac-12’s leader in assists, scored two to lead the Cardinal to victory.

The rivalry game victory extends Stanford’s unbeaten streak over the Golden Bears to 10, and the Cardinal is now also unbeaten in their last 11 Pac-12 road games. Stanford’s four goals against Cal were also the most scored in a series with the Bears since a 6-1 victory late in 2012.

Stanford’s first goal of the game came in the 26th minute when junior midfielder Amir Bashti scored off of an assist by freshman defender Andrew Aprahamian and freshman forward Charlie Wehan. This was Bashti’s sixth goal of the season. He is currently the Pac-12 Player of the Week.

In the 32nd minute the Cardinal again found the back of the net — this time off of a penalty kick goal from Beason. The Cardinal entered the half up 2-0, prompting California to substitute out senior goalkeeper Drake Callender for junior Noah Texter.

Cal scored their first goal in the 54th minute when junior defender Adam Mosharrafa faltered attempting to clear a cross from Berkeley forward Simon Lekressner. The ball bounced off of Mosharrafa’s shin for an own goal.

But 14 minutes later Beason fought back and extended the Cardinal’s lead, scoring a header off of a corner kick to bring to score to 3-1. Senior midfielder Sam Ebstein scored for the Golden Bears in the 75th minute, but Stanford secured their victory in the 82nd minute with a decisive goal from freshman forward Zach Ryan, marking his fourth goal of the season.

Stanford took 17 shots (six on goal) throughout the game — compared to seven (six on goal) from the Golden Bears.

Stanford will continue their road trip with Oregon State next on the schedule on Thursday at 6 p.m. PST in Corvallis, Oregon.
