After brushing off 16 opponents to snatch the Thompson’s Trophy from Thames River, sailing is preparing for an even more crowded — and more challenging — weekend of racing.
The Cardinal will be split more than 2500 miles apart, with some of the sailors flying to Kings Point, NY, joining a 19-team field including heavyweights Charleston and Georgetown. The regatta is set to be the third-largest yet of Stanford’s spring season, and the largest to take place outside of California.
Back on the West Coast, women’s sailing will head to nearby Los Angeles for the Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference (PCCSC) Women’s Championships this weekend. Hosted in Long Beach by USC, the event will serve as a qualifier for the 2019 Women’s National Championship.
Stanford is rolling under interim head coach Clinton Hayes and first-year assistant coach Belle Strachan, who have yet to see the team place out of the top five in a meet since Hayes took over on March 12.
The Cardinal has seven first-place finishes on the year, and — after a twelfth-place finish at the Navy Women’s Regatta in Annapolis last month — the women’s team is looking to get back on top heading into the championship season.
