Freshmen flooded into Old Union on a brisk Monday evening as On Call, Stanford’s student-run cafe, opened its doors to serve the first drinks of the year.
Among the cafe’s new fall menu items are drinks: “Fallin’ S’more,” “Orange is the New Cocoa,” “Pumpkin Pi,” and “Pick Me, Choose Me, Love Me” and toasties: “The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From the Toast” and “Pestomato.”
“My personal favorite that’s been added is the Apple Toast,” said Sam Solomon ’28, a barista and former Daily staff writer. The new dish, officially named “The Apple Doesn’t Fall Far From The Toast,” features an apple spread, whipped cream, apples and cinnamon on a brioche toast.
On Call Cafe’s self-proclaimed “most loyal fan,” Eshaal Bashir ’27, was “super hyped” about opening night.
Bashir, who has “already been established as On Call’s number one fan by her friends,” was really happy to see the long line at the cafe’s opening night. “It means they’re doing well, and it was probably a successful opening night,” said Bashir.
“People who heard about us during admit weekend or NSO are excited to make On Call a part of their home,” said Solomon.
Kayli Wong ’29 and Bella Ramirez ’29 stood in line, “super excited” about their drinks.
“I love the vibes with everything. It’s such a cute cafe,” Wong said.
This is not the first time that students have praised the ambiance at On Call Cafe. On its final night last spring, both Eddy Jiang ’28 and Minoo Jang ‘28 said that they began coming to On Call Cafe because of its vibe.
“We’re not a standard coffee shop, because this isn’t a standard school,” Solomon said. “We really reflect the curiosity, creativity and kind of wackiness that Stanford has.”
Aaron Zhang ’27, a barista at On Call Cafe, said that On Call staff want to “make new Stanford traditions” and are excited to see student life “be funky again.”
