Stanford field hockey (8-4, 2-2 ACC) defeated No. 3 Duke (9-3, 4-1 ACC) 3-2 in a thrilling overtime win on Friday night.
The Cardinal started strong, with senior Mia Clark scoring in the first minute off a penalty corner. Duke then had three consecutive penalty corners, but due to Stanford’s strong defense and six saves by junior goalkeeper Anya Jackson, the Blue Devils were unable to follow through.
In the second quarter, Duke tied the game with a penalty stroke taken by #18 Julia Boehringer, bringing the game to 1-1 going into halftime. Seven minutes into the third quarter, the Blue Devils scored again, but the Cardinal stopped Duke’s momentum in the first minute of the fourth quarter with a goal by senior Puja Nanjappa, assisted by junior Bea Varley. In the 59th minute of the game, Duke had the opportunity to score on a penalty corner, but Jackson blocked that chance.
Regulation time ended at 2-2, sending the game into overtime and giving the Cardinal only 15 minutes to bring home a win. Stanford ended the sudden death period with a goal by Varley in just the third minute. Senior Gemma Townsend weaved through defenders to set up Varley for the killer goal.Â
Jackson closed the night with a total of 10 saves, just shy of a career high of 12. Friday night’s win matches Stanford’s highest-ranked opponent’s defeat in over 25 years.Â
The Cardinal faced off against No. 8 Wake Forest on Sunday but fell 4-1, unable to carry the momentum of Friday’s game. Stanford will play UC Davis next on Oct. 16.
