With basketball’s home season openers just days away, Stanford Athletics has scheduled a full slate of events, giveaways and performances at Maples Pavilion for students to show out for the teams.
The first of many exciting student opportunities is what Athletics calls a “student takeover,” encouraging dorms to rally behind the Card. At the takeover, the residence with the most students present will receive a grand prize to be announced at a future date.
Both the men’s and women’s games will feature a range of free giveaways, including food at halftime, shirts and posters, a postgame raffle, a chance to sink a half-court shot for $5,000 and a prize for the loudest fan.
The women’s game will have free shirts designed by students in FashionX. “Stanford Athletics and FashionX love to work together. There’s a really fun collaboration in building hype around sports games,” said Lilli Whelan ’29, the club’s merchandise coordinator.
The men’s basketball home opener is set for 7 p.m. on Nov. 2 against Eastern Washington. Student performers will help set the tone with a pregame DJ set, a group anthem performance by Counterpoint and a halftime performance by DV8.
The women’s team opens its season at 7 p.m. on Nov. 4 versus St. Mary’s. The game will also feature a pregame student DJ set, a group anthem performance and a halftime musical performance by the O-Tone.
“It’s going to be super fun. We’re going to Stanford’s roots as a school that loves sports, and that really supports our sports,” Whelan said. “So we are bringing the campus together, from the arts to the athletics, under one roof of Maples Pavilion.”
With giveaways, student performances and dorm competitions, Stanford Athletics hopes students will bring the energy to Maples Pavilion as a new season of Cardinal basketball gets underway.
