Several classrooms and student residences lost power Tuesday morning in an outage that lasted until 2 p.m. Classes taking place in the roughly 30 affected buildings were advised to cancel or relocate.

A preliminary AlertSU notification was sent out at 9:20 a.m., with a follow-up containing instructions on how to proceed sent at 10:39 a.m. The situation persisted until 2:04 p.m., when power was restored and all operations resumed as normal.

The outage primarily impacted buildings in Main Quad and the surrounding area, including the Peterson Laboratory to the south and Encina Hall to the east. Branner Dining and Olives Cafe were closed for the duration of the outage. All other dining halls remained open.

The Cowell Cluster residences, including Kappa Kappa Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, Pi Beta Phi, Alpha Phi and 539 Cowell Lane, all experienced outages. Residents in these houses, whose kitchens were out of service, received an additional dining hall pass.

“I was getting ready for the day and then all of a sudden the power turned off,” said Ella Grossman ’28, a resident of Kappa Alpha Theta.

Students in affected residences also experienced appliance issues. “Nothing was working, only the backup lights,” said Clara Cestone ’29, another resident of Kappa Alpha Theta, who noted that her clothes were stuck mid-wash cycle when the power went out.

“In our student fridge, food had to get thrown out because it was off for so long,” said Annika Kaval ’27, a Residential Assistant for Kappa Kappa Gamma.

Stanford runs entirely on renewable energy, with much of its heating and cooling managed in-house through Stanford Energy System Innovations (SESI)’s Central Energy Facility (CEF). The University receives electricity from the state grid, which is transmitted across campus through the on-site substation at the CEF.
