Stanford field hockey (10-7, 2-6 ACC) celebrated its eight seniors and ended regular season play with a win over rival No. 17 UC Berkeley (9-7, 2-6 ACC) on Thursday night.

Junior goalkeeper Anya Jackson had an impressive save in the first minute of play when the Bears made an early attack. In the third minute of the first quarter, senior midfielder Star Horlock threaded a pass through Cal’s offensive to give senior forward Gemma Townsend a clean shot to the back of the net. The Cardinal went into the second quarter with a 1-0 lead.

Stanford capitalized on an early opportunity to score in the second quarter off of a corner. Horlock delivered the ball to the top of the circle where sophomore midfielder Natalie Hoppe passed back to Horlock, finding open space on the left side of the cage. Horlock floated the ball to the right corner of the net before Jackson thwarted another Cal attempt right before the halftime break, leaving the Bears shutout in the first half.

Cal got its first point on the board when junior forward Liz Klompmaker shot a deflected ball off of a corner. The Bears had three corners at the end of the third, but the Cardinal stopped them each time. In the fourth quarter, the Cardinal kept Cal to only one shot on target, displaying their impressive defense. Jackson finished the game with six saves, and the Senior Night matchup ended in a 2-1 win.

With this win, Stanford ended Cal’s postseason hopes. The Cardinal finished its regular season with the same conference record as Cal’s (2-6), and because of Thursday’s win, Stanford will move on to the ACC tournament. The team is set to play as the No. 8 seed against No. 1 North Carolina (11-6, 6-2 ACC) on Tuesday in the quarterfinals.
