7:54 PM: Stanford improves to 2-2 while the Bears fall to 3-1.

7:53 PM: Celsi strikes out swinging. FINAL SCORE: Stanford 5, Cal 0.

7:52 PM: Reuvekamp grounds out to short. Cal down to its final out.

7:51 PM: Grant Diede strikes out swinging on a 2-2 pitch on the outside corner. One out in the ninth.

7:49 PM: Lindquist takes a 5-0 lead into the top of the ninth.

7:48 PM: Paid attendance at tonight’s game: 1,198.

7:47 PM: Diekroeger and Ragira fly out. On to the top of the ninth.

7:43 PM: Jackson leads off the bottom of the eighth with a popout to shallow right.

7:39 PM: Brakeman gets Wark to ground 0ut and the runner advances. Dutto then chops out to short. Three more outs for the Card.

7:37 PM: Campbell strikes out and Taylor holds on this time. Press box buzzing with talk of a potential four-strikeout inning for Lindquist.

7:36 PM: Campbell slices one just foul down the first-base line. Would’ve been Cal’s first run.

7:35 PM: Sam Lindquist is the new pitcher for Stanford. He strikes out Paul but the pitch sneaks through to the backstop, so it’s a runner on first with no outs.

7:30 PM: Taylor lines out to left-center, barely misses the gap. We head to the top of the eighth with the score Stanford 5, Cal 0.

7:27 PM: Ringo strikes out swinging before Hoffpauir, who is still looking for the first hit of his career, lines out to center.

7:21 PM: Brakeman gets his second straight strikeout by freezing Rodriguez on an 0-2 count. We enter the seventh-inning stretch with the Card leading 5-0.

7:20 PM: After hitting a batter, Brakeman bounces back with a fielder’s choice and a strikeout.

7:15 PM: Kauppila grounds out and the inning is over.

7:13 PM: Ragira draws a walk and steals second, and Slater is hit by a 1-2 pitch. Two on and two out. Fourth batter hit by Cal pitching.

7:05 PM: Brakeman’s 2-2 fastball gets Kranson swinging and he’s out of the jam. Bottom of the sixth coming up, with Diekroeger leading off and Stanford still ahead 5-0.

7:04 PM: Count is 2-1 to Kranson. Pivotal moment here for Brakeman, the young pitcher.

7:03 PM: Dutto hit by 0-2 pitch, so Kranson, the eight-hitter, comes up with two outs and the bases loaded.

7:00 PM: Stanford bringing in freshman Marcus Brakeman in relief. Schmidt lasts 3.2 innings with three hits and no runs, but he is still responsible for the two runners on.

6:59 PM: Wark walks, and Dutto has the chance to narrow the Stanford lead to two. Runners on first and second with two outs.

6:56 PM: Schmidt gets his second strikeout of the evening as he nails Campbell on the inside corner. A wild pitch advances Paul.

6:54 PM: Schmidt plunks Rodriguez. Paul pops up and Diekroeger drops it, but he still gets the out at second. Paul’s feeling pretty glad he ran that one out.

6:49 PM: Jackson strikes out swinging and Stanford strands a runner at third. As we head to the top of the sixth, it’s 5-0 Cardinal.

6:45 PM: After a three-pitch strikeout by Hoffpauir (0-for-3), Taylor bounces out on a comebacker to the mound. Great play by Hildenberger to keep Ringo at third. Jackson to the plate with two out.

6:42 PM: Senior Justin Ringo pinch-hits for Guymon and triples down the first-base line on the first pitch. Kauppila comes around to score and Stanford leads 5-0.

6:41 PM: Leadoff walk for Kauppila. Stanford’s last six baserunners have reached without the ball leaving the infield.

6:37 PM: 1-2-3 top of the fifth for Schmidt, who has scattered three baserunners over 2.2 frames.

6:32 PM: Slater flies out to left and Stanford leads the bases loaded for the second time. But they extend the lead for the third time in four innings.

6:28 PM: Cal changes its pitcher with Slater, who is 2-for-2 tonight, coming to the plate. The Bears’ fourth hurler of the evening will be Trevor Hildenberger.

6:28 PM: Blandino walks on five pitches, and Taylor comes in to score. Three free bases for Stanford this inning as the Cardinal takes a 4-0 lead.

6:27 PM: Blandino works the count to 3-0 as Monsour nearly hits him.

6:25 PM: Ragira plunked — that’s Monsour’s third in two innings. Bases loaded for the Card’s best power hitter in the lineup, Blandino.

6:24 PM: Diekroeger out swinging on a 2-2 changeup. Ragira steps up to the plate.

6:22 PM: Jackson comes up with an infield single to short, and Stanford’s hottest hitter, Diekroeger, comes up with two on and one out.

6:19 PM: Hoffpauir grounds out, but Wayne Taylor gets skimmed by a 1-2 pitch. Jackson comes to the plate with one on.

6:14 PM: Michael Kranson grounds out to end the inning. Hoffpauir coming up in the bottom of the fourth.

6:12 PM: Wark lines a two-out single to Hoffpauir — payback for that second-inning snag. Another quick single and it’s two for the Bears.

6:04 PM: Guymon fouls out to end the threat, but Stanford extends its lead to three in the inning. Sophomore righty David Schmidt in for his second inning of work tonight.

6:03 PM: Kauppila walks. Guymon to the plate with the bases loaded.

6:01 PM: Back-to-back singles by Blandino and Slater and the Card is rallying with two out. That’s the second hit for Slater, with his first career hit coming in the first inning.

5:59 PM: Ragira grounds out to third, but Diekroeger beats out the throw at home. Adept running from the Cardinal junior, and it’s 3-0 Stanford.

5:57 PM: Wild pitch moves Diekroeger to third. 2-0 count to Brian Ragira.

5:56 PM: Diekroeger hit by 1-2 pitch. Runner on first with one out for Stanford in the bottom of the third.

5:51 PM: McArdle gets Rodriguez to ground into a one-out double play. Jackson coming up for the Card.

5:43 PM: 1-2-3 inning for Lowden. On to the third, still 2-0 Stanford. Top of the order leading off for Cal.

5:37 PM: Reuvekamp lines out to center to end the top of the second.

5:33 PM: After a walk and a single, Cal is threatening with runners at the corners and two outs. Hoffpauir nearly grabbed that last liner but the inning goes on.

5:27 PM: Cal tight end Jacob Wark flies out to the wall, where Cardinal safety Zach Hoffpauir makes the interception. Gotta love two-sport athletes. Two outs in the top of the second.

5:23 PM: Kauppila grounds into a double play after working the count to 3-1. Bears out of the inning, but Stanford gets four hits and two runs in the opening frame. Compare that to 15 hits all weekend and just one on Sunday.

5:17 PM: Pitching change for Cal. Junior Michael Lowden into the game for Muse-Fisher.

5:15 PM: Sophomore Austin Slater pinch hits for the DH spot and singles home Diekroeger. Runners on the corners, 2-0 Stanford.

5:13 PM: Brian Ragira singles on the first pitch he sees and Muse-Fisher is in trouble early. Cal bullpen getting warm. Alex Blandino advances both runners; two on, one out.

5:12 PM: Danny Diekroeger singles Jackson home, and the Cardinal takes an early 1-0 lead. Still no out in the first.

5:09 PM: Drew Jackson leads off with an infield single, his first career hit at Sunken Diamond. He then advances on defensive interference on a wild pickoff followed by a tackle by Cal first baseman Mitchell Kranson.

5:07 PM: McArdle strikes out Chris Paul (no, not that Chris Paul) looking to end the inning. The righty looks solid to start this one.

5:05 PM: McArdle gets two quick flyouts before Devon Rodriguez singles up the middle for Cal’s first baserunner.

5:02 PM: First pitch is an 87 mph fastball by McArdle for a strike.

4:48 PM: Eric Smith and Stephen Piscotty are among the recent Stanford baseball alumni in attendance. That’s the starting battery from the Cardinal’s 5-3 win the last time these two teams met.

4:35 PM: Dean McArdle, meanwhile, was the losing pitcher in that 18-inning series opener last May. That’s what you get for scattering three hits over six innings of long relief.

4:30 PM: Chris Muse-Fisher was a solid reliever for Cal as a freshman, posting a 1.93 ERA in 16 appearances. One of his three wins came against Stanford in that 15-5 beatdown by the Golden Bears.

4:20 PM: A few thoughts on Stanford’s side, all in the outfield. Austin Wilson is still out with a sore elbow, so Zach Hoffpauir (also a safety on the football team) gets his first career start in right. Brian Guymon continues to get opportunities as a junior and Drew Jackson breaks into the starting lineup for the third time in four games as a freshman.

4:14 PM: Tonight’s starting lineups:

 

Marquess will eventually pinch-hit for Hochstatter, of course.

4:00 PM: Lineups coming out. Going to be interesting to see what Mark Marquess does to spark some hitting after last weekend’s offensive struggles.

3:19 PM: Stanford did win these teams’ only non-conference game 19-6 last season. Here’s to wishful thinking.

3:14 PM: The Friday loss in that series was one of the strangest, most emotional games in recent Sunken Diamond memory: 18 innings, six hours, 569 pitches, an ejection and a foul ball off the fence called a home run. Cal went on to win 5-4 when Tony Renda, now graduated, got his first hit in his eighth at-bat. The game tied the longest in each school’s history, and the Card looked beat up in its 15-5 loss the following afternoon.

3:07 PM: Stanford won two of its four games against Cal last season, but lost two of three in the conference series. That season-ending series loss — at Sunken Diamond, no less — was especially painful because it kept the Card from a share of the Pac-12 title. Stanford had won eight straight before dropping the first two against the Bears.

2:27 PM: Good afternoon! We’re about two and a half hours away from first pitch at Sunken Diamond, where Stanford’s home-opener will finally be played after a rain delay on Tuesday. The No. 15 Cardinal (1-2) is looking to bounce back from a shaky start at No. 13 Rice last weekend, while the Golden Bears (3-0) are hoping to stay hot after sweeping unranked Michigan in Berkeley with three walk-off wins.
