Men’s tennis hosts Oregon in conference matchup

April 7, 2016, 2:45 a.m.

Stanford men’s tennis (10-8, 2-2 Pac-12) will face off against Oregon (15-4, 2-2) this Friday, April 8, at the Taube Family Tennis Center in a match that will help determine what direction the rest of the season will take, as the team is approaches the end of conference match ups.

The Cardinal currently own a winning record overall, but remain at .500 in Pac-12 play. This record places them 36th in the standings, doubling the 18th place ranking they had at the beginning of the season.

Stanford now stands in the middle of the Pac-12, tied with Oregon with a 2-2 conference record. However, while Stanford is 10-8 overall, Oregon is 15-4. The Ducks are also coming off two wins, most recently shutting out Utah 4-0 at home. Meanwhile, Stanford suffered two losses last weekend to USC and UCLA, despite strong performances on the doubles courts.

Last weekend, the Cardinal teams of Tom Fawcett and Maciek Romanowicz, Nolan Paige and David Wilczynski and Yale Goldberg and Sameer Kumar all garnered wins over their higher-ranked Pac-12 opponents, with the Goldberg and Kumar duo winning its match both days. However, Stanford struggled on the singles courts, losing all matches on both days.

As the team takes on the Ducks this weekend, Oregon junior Jayson Amos and sophomore Tom Fawcett will be the matchup to watch on the first singles court. Fawcett is consistently strong as Stanford’s No. 1 singles player, enjoying a 16-4 record this season, including an 11-4 showing against nationally ranked opponents. However, as Fawcett is to Stanford, Jayson is to Oregon: He has a 21-6 record and is consistently one of its strongest players.

Come out and support men’s tennis this weekend to see the Cardinal take on the Ducks, and again on Saturday as they take on Washington.
