Former Cardinal Grant Fisher breaks indoor world record

After four American records, three national titles and two Olympic bronze medals, Grant Fisher adds yet another title to his illustrious career, setting a new indoor world record with his 3,000-meter run at the 117th Millrose Games.

The former Stanford standout clocked a 7:22.91 in New York City on Saturday, dipping under Ethiopian runner Lamecha Girma’s 7:23.81 that was set last February. Fisher, who graduated from Stanford in 2019, once held the NCAA record in the same distance.

The race was a head-to-head battle between Fisher and fellow American Cole Hocker, the 2024 Olympic champion in the 1,500 meters. The duo came through the first 2,000 meters at record pace, clocking 4:58 behind the pacesetters. With 600 meters to go, Hocker surged to take the lead from Fisher, but Fisher followed right on his heels. On the final turn, Fisher shot wide and outkicked Hocker to win the race by 0.23 seconds.

Behind Fisher, Hocker posted the world’s second-fastest time ever recorded, while John Greisser broke the French national record in third place. Former Cardinal Ky Robinson, who recently turned pro with the On Athletics Club, placed fourth and set a new Australian record.

The Millrose Games has long been the stage for Fisher’s record-breaking performances. He first won the 3,000 meters there in 2019 during his senior collegiate season, beating Wisconsin rival Morgan McDonald by 0.14 seconds to set a new NCAA record. At the 2024 Millrose Games, Fisher shattered the indoor two-mile American record that was previously held by Galen Rupp.

Fisher’s 3,000-meter performance this year was an eight-second personal best. To close out his indoor season, he is now focused on chasing his indoor 5,000 meter best of 12:51.84 at the Boston University Valentine Invitational on Feb. 14. In his current form, he looks poised to challenge the American record of 12:51.61 and world record of 12:49.60.
