The following is an open letter written by over 215 faculty that was read in the Faculty Senate meeting on Thursday, April 10. The letter outlines specific, concrete steps and actions on which they request transparency and accountability from Stanford’s governing bodies.
The letter was signed by faculty of all ranks, from every single department, and from each school. It is a token of the wide-ranging opposition to and distress at the current climate in higher education among faculty and a call for active push-back and a clear public plan from the governing bodies to protect our community and Stanford’s core educational and research mission.
The Daily received a copy of the letter with permission to publish for the broader Stanford community.
Dear President Levin and Provost Martinez,
We write to you as alarmed faculty and scholars to express our deepest concern for the future of academic research in the United States and for our community and mission here at Stanford University.
In the past two months, higher education has been under attack with unprecedented violence. American universities across the nation have been targeted with an array of aggressive measures designed to instill fear, curtail research or target individuals for ideological reasons.
The very existence and vitality of our work and the purpose of our institution are at stake.
We need to know that Stanford University will lead with integrity and resolve to defend our community, fulfill its mission and uphold shared values: academic freedom, freedom of speech, the pursuit of knowledge and individual liberties in a democratic society.
We appreciate and endorse the President and Provost’s recent statements that support academic freedom. But words alone won’t be enough. We urge Stanford’s leadership to take the following actions:
- To publicly condemn all assaults on universities and academic freedom; to guarantee its members a working space conducive to the free expression of ideas and intellectual inquiry without fear of retaliation.
- To resist by legally contesting and refusing to comply with unlawful federal intrusions and demands that threaten academic freedom and university self-governance.
- To refuse to assist with the targeting of members of the Stanford community based on their political views, including those who might be especially vulnerable given their immigration status; to publicly commit to cooperate with immigration authorities only to the extent strictly required by law.
- To continue supporting programs of scientific research based on their scientific merit and to commit to providing stopgap funding for federally-funded projects that are under threat because of recent cuts.
- To continue supporting vital scholarly work across all fields, including climate science, medical research and the study of human diversity through the lens of gender, cultural, racial and sexual identity.
- To collaborate with other universities, professional organizations and our alumni networks to more effectively counter these threats to democracy and science, including through legal action.
Respectfully,
The undersigned:
