We appreciate President Levin’s and Provost Martinez’s statement in support of Harvard on Monday. They note that Harvard’s objections are rooted in a tradition of liberty, that America’s universities are important and that constructive change cannot come by destroying the nation’s capacity for scientific research or the government taking control of private institutions. We urge them to go further, however: to issue a statement of their own on behalf of Stanford condemning the government’s actions and vowing to stand in solidarity with Harvard and other universities to defend American higher education.

Dear President Levin,
Alan Garber M.D. ’83’s letter this morning has been a beacon of hope for many of us on campus. While addressed to Members of the Harvard Community, the letter generously invokes all private universities. It expresses what America’s great universities mean to the country and to the world, as bastions of free thought and inquiry that transform the lives of people everywhere. President Garber states a fundamental principle of academic freedom: no government should dictate what we teach, who we admit and hire and which areas of study and inquiry we pursue.
For the government’s abandonment of its partnership with universities, as Garber writes, will endanger the lives of millions and jeopardize the nation’s economic security and vitality. He also clearly identifies the peril we face: assertions of power, unmoored from the law and seeking to destroy what has been built with brilliance and dedication over generations.
Garber is speaking for all of us in higher education, for the American public and for everyone throughout the world who benefits from the work we do. This is why it gives us great hope when he promises that Harvard will not surrender. Harvard and Garber have admirably and courageously taken a leadership position in standing up for American higher education.
We are writing to urge you to make a strong, public statement of support and stand with Harvard. Be as firm and clear as Garber in vowing to defend our autonomy and uphold our crucial ability to define the terms under which we teach, research and serve the public good. It is past time for Stanford to follow the example of Sally Kornbluth (MIT), Christopher Eisgruber (Princeton), Michael Roth (Wesleyan), William Treanor (Georgetown Law) and others to take a stand in solidarity with our peers in this existential assault on universities.
As many in the Stanford community have pressed for more than a month, and as more and more university leaders are showing us now, if the AAU (Association of American Universities) and all of America’s powerful universities stood side by side, we would be formidable indeed. This fight cannot be carried out quietly or in private. Stanford’s message needs to be loud and clear so that yet other voices can join in. Together we will be an indomitable force in defense of “the fearless and unfettered pursuit of truth.” As President Garber quoted the Harvard motto, “Veritas,” we can add ours, “The Wind of Freedom Blows.”
