As a black graduate student I understand the hurt, fear, and outrage that has surfaced in response to Chaze Vinci’s online behavior. It has affected me in ways I won't put to words. But I’m troubled by how our need for safety has been framed; I’m cautious about the strategy that is taking shape.
Subcontracted workers have kept Stanford safe throughout the pandemic. Their work in undergraduate dorms, graduate housing, food service facilities and research laboratories has ensured our well-being, often at great risk to themselves. Stanford’s policies have forced workers into a false decision: Choose between a paycheck and personal/public health, all while the University has the resources to protect both.
