A path forward for fossil fuel divestment

WHEREAS the Academic Council of Stanford University endorses the spirit of both the June 2020 Board of Trustees Statement committing Stanford to the objectives of the 2015 Paris Agreement, and the March 2020 ASSU/UGS/GSC resolution for divestment from fossil fuel companies; WHEREAS the Stanford Management Company has reduced its active holdings in energy from 16% of the Merged Pool to less than 1.5%, and the endowment funds managed by SMC do not include direct holdings in any of the 100 companies that are the subject of the petition by Fossil Free Stanford, and sustainable investments constitute 4% of the Merged Pool; WHEREAS the Academic Council affirms that divestment from fossil fuel investments is only one of a number of actions that are required for Stanford to achieve its stated goals of addressing climate and sustainability challenges; WHEREAS the deep linkages between sustainability, inequality and racism require prioritizing environmental justice scholarship, education and clinical practice (including energy poverty, climate vulnerability, and environmental racism); WHEREAS although Stanford has been a global leader in energy, climate and sustainability research, education and operations, realizing the stated commitment to being a global leader in fulfilling the goals of the Paris Agreement will require Stanford itself to reach those goals much sooner than 2050; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ACADEMIC COUNCIL OF STANFORD UNIVERSITY: THAT the Academic Council strongly encourages Stanford to urgently continue to refocus its energy sector investment portfolio into non-emitting technologies, as well as to greatly accelerate its present process of divesting from fossil fuel companies. THAT the Academic Council further strongly encourages Stanford to revise its target date for completing the university’s transition to at least net-zero greenhouse gas emissions in both its operations and endowment to well before 2050, and no later than 2030.
